Domaine Marquis d'Angerville

Marquis d'Angerville is Volnay's reference domaine and one of Burgundy's founding houses of estate bottling: in the 1930s, Jacques d'Angerville broke with the négociant trade over adulterated wine and began bottling his own — a stand that helped create the domaine-bottled Burgundy collectors now take for granted. The holdings are all Volnay at heart, led by the walled Clos des Ducs monopole beside the house and premier crus Champans, Taillepieds, Frémiets, and Caillerets. Guillaume d'Angerville, who left banking to take over in 2003, converted the vineyards to biodynamics and sharpened an already precise style: pale, perfumed, tensile Volnay that ages on acidity and fragrance rather than extract — the appellation's aristocratic ideal made literal.
