Tasting notes

Ian D'Agata · Vinous · 95

Marvellous old Bordeaux with delicate cassis, graphite, and faded violet nuances. A legendary wine for this estate, equal to the 1982 but ageing better.

The 1986 Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is a vintage I have tasted several times, including at the château, but this bottle is one of the best I have encountered. It has a vibrant nose of blackberry intermixed with cedar and a light ferrous note, perhaps even a suggestion of paprika as it moves into its secondary phase. Showing plenty of undergrowth, the bouquet coheres beautifully in the glass as subtle clove aromas manifest over time. The palate is fresh and lively with black fruit aplenty and quite strict tannins that lend it an off-dry feel. One of the most saline bottles I can remember, this example displays exquisite delineation and a slightly softer landing than the bottle I tasted several years ago. Outstanding. Tasted at the château.

Tasted 7 times since bottling with consistent notes.

Just now emerging from a very clumsy dormant period, Pichon-Lalande’s dense ruby/purple-coloured 1986 still has the colour of a 4 or 5-year-old wine. This is the most tannic and backward Pichon-Lalande after 1975 and before 1996. The wine was completely closed down until just recently. The wine shows notes of cedar, black currants, earth, spice box, and licorice, followed by a medium to full-bodied, very concentrated, intense palate with a still noticeable tannic structure, a relatively big, muscular style for Pichon-Lalande.
