Charles Heidsieck Rosé Millesime 2008

An amazing 2008 rosé Champagne that has all the structure and aromatic complexity - sushi ginger, oolong tea and caramelized mandarin orange - we associate with this vintage, but also has more charm than most. On the palate, this has stunning concentration, yet is diamond bright. The interplay of creaminess, fine tannins and mineral acidity builds and builds at the breathtaking finish. The color comes from about 7% pinot noir red wine, partly from the little-known Les Riceys in the far south of Champagne. Drink or hold.

The nose opens with oystershell saltiness, creaminess and fruity notions of Red Delicious apple flesh that is perfumed with blood orange. The palate is more slender than the nose suggests and expresses its richness in depth rather than breadth. There is a compelling white pepper savouriness that pervades the wine and seems to highlight its statuesque nature, its vivid freshness, its absolute poise. More air reveals hints of candlewax and candied orange. An aromatic and elegant marvel.

Elaborated with 63% Pinot Noir (including 9% of red wine) and 37% Chardonnay, this rosé from Charles Heidsieck is sourced from 11 grands and premiers crus. With a much lower dosage than in previous years (7g/L), it has a spicy and smoky nose with pomegranate, citrus, liquorice and red berry aromas. Harmonious and elegant, the palate is full-bodied with both tense and fresh texture interplays, with a vinous structure. A gastronomic rosé built for long ageing.
