Château Pape Clément — estate

The estate

Château Pape Clément has been making wine longer than almost any named vineyard in Bordeaux — planted around 1300 and owned by Bertrand de Goth, the archbishop who became Pope Clement V and gave the estate his name. Today its vines sit at the city's edge in Pessac, under the ownership of Bernard Magrez, who has driven the estate to a polished, ambitious modern style: a red of deep, smoky Graves character and creamy tannin, and a white — rich, exotic, honeyed yet fresh — that ranks among Pessac-Léognan's most striking. Seven centuries in, the estate has rarely been in better form.
