Domaine Michel Lafarge

Michel Lafarge was the conscience of Volnay: a vigneron who farmed through eight decades, converted the domaine to biodynamics in the 1990s when the idea still drew smirks, and never once chased fashion. The estate he built with his son Frédéric — now joined by the next generation — remains the appellation's classical benchmark, led by Clos des Chênes and the walled Clos du Château des Ducs monopole. The winemaking is almost defiantly simple: old vines, native yeasts, very little new oak, and bottlings that can seem slight in youth before unfolding over twenty years into the most complete red Burgundy of their village. For collectors who prize longevity over early flash, Lafarge is Volnay.
