64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot.

This needs time in the glass but unfurls to reveal cedar, cinnamon, tobacco, cassis and rose notes. It's heady and confident stuff I've tasted several times over the past few months and have been hugely impressed by, especially with food.

The 2005 Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande has been an inconsistent performer from bottle over the years. Retasting at the château at the 20-year stage, Nicolas Glumineau poured the wine at 9.30 am and then repoured the same bottle over dinner that same day. This proved how vital it is to afford the 2005s plenty of aeration, because the second was far superior. Vivacious red fruit fills out on what had initially appeared to be a rather atypically weak nose, accented by cedar and touches of wild mint. The palate is well balanced, fresh and cohesive with decent weight on the finish. Bottles have been variable over the years, and I have meted out criticism myself. But I cannot deny that after 12 hours, this Pauillac is perhaps showing its true mettle. Perhaps the fault was never the wine, but the eagerness of us tasters to pour scorn before it had a chance to open? Tasted at the château.

What a nose on this, with orchids and currants, this is very perfumed and pretty. Full-bodied, with bright and lively acidity. Rose petals and citrus fruit on the palate give way to a long and intense finish. Wait and see where this goes.

(64% cabernet sauvignon, 29% merlot, 6% cab franc and 1% petit verdot) Good red-ruby color. Raspberry, redcurrant, tobacco leaf and flowers on the nose. Red-fruity and refined in the mouth, showing none of the smoke, animal or chocolate qualities I associate with this chateau. Distinctly delicate and fine, with moderate density and suave, building tannins. Incidentally, the IPT here is 68, compared to 73 in 2004. A wine of finesse: only time, and elevage, will tell if there's enough strength behind it. If there is, this 2005 will merit a score at the high end of my projected range.

Made in a more mid-weight, elegant style that certainly brings charm, the 2005 Château Pichon-Longueville Comtesse De Lalande has a pretty perfume of red currants, plums, spring flowers, and spicy, truffly, earthy nuances. With medium-bodied richness, an elegant, seamless mouthfeel, and polished tannins, it’s not a blockbuster but is one of those wines that grows on you over the course of an evening. While today’s releases bring another level of everything, it’s still an outstanding wine that should keep for another decade.

The 2005 Pichon Lalande, with its aromatics of cassis, forest floor and earth are followed by a medium-bodied wine that doesn’t have quite the length and richness the aromatics suggest. Nevertheless, it is medium-bodied, elegant, and pure, and a classic example for this château. Drink it now as well as over the next 15 or so years. It is showing better than my earlier notes suggest.

The 2005 Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is a wine from the château's less brilliant period. In this tasting, it is dark, heavy and clumsy. All that said, the 2005 has aged relatively well, there is just not much complexity to speak of. Muted, unfocused aromatics and dull fruit are penalizing. It is truly remarkable to see how much the Pichon Comtesse has progressed since this wine was made.
