The estate

When Daniel and Florence Cathiard — former Olympic skiers turned entrepreneurs — bought Château Smith Haut Lafitte in 1990, it was a sleeping estate on superb Martillac gravel. Three decades of obsessive investment later, it stands with Pessac-Léognan's elite: organically farmed vines, an in-house cooperage, a Cabernet-led red that reached a perfect score in 2009, and a barrel-fermented white that many rank among Bordeaux's greatest dry whites. The style is signature Graves — smoke, dark berries, and warm stone — delivered with unusual polish in both colors.
