Penfolds is Australia's grandest wine name, with a history stretching back to 1844, when Dr Christopher Rawson Penfold planted vines at Magill on the edge of Adelaide. Its modern fame rests on Max Schubert's creation of Grange in the 1950s — a Shiraz conceived to age like great Bordeaux that became the country's defining wine.
