The estate

Giacomo Conterno stands at the summit of traditional Barolo. From Monforte d'Alba, the family has made Monfortino — a Riserva aged for years in great Slavonian casks and released only when Roberto Conterno judges it ready — into arguably Italy's most revered wine, a byword for austere, immortal Nebbiolo. The engine is Cascina Francia, the Serralunga vineyard the family bought in 1974, joined in recent years by Cerretta and Arione. Nothing here chases fashion: long macerations, big old wood, decades of patience. Even the Barbera d'Alba is built like a monument.
